Fall leaves

Bapa loves Gram
She's been gone a few years now...and all of us who knew her, loved her. There has never been any question or doubt in my mind of the love Bapa and Gram felt for each other. They were together through the worst times, and celebrated the best times together. Their love has been an inspiration, a goal, for everyone in our family to imitate.Gram and Bapa started dating when she was only 15. After High School, they ran away together and got married secretly over the weekend, and took a short honeymoon in Chicago. Not long after that, Bapa set Gram up in an apartment on the top floor of a house, and he joined the Navy. He was gone for 4 long years, working on a ship as a mine sweeper - his ship went ahead of the fleet searching for mines in the water - setting them off before their fleet came through so the Americans could pass safely. I can not imagine the heartache Gram must have felt during those long days.
When Bapa got out of the Navy, he went to work in Michigan City, but the company he worked for fell on hard times. They thrived when they had been making supplies for the war, but later had only orders for new railroad cars to fill. Bapa liked the work, but it was inconsistent, and with a wife and child on the way, it was frustrating.
My dad was born, and Bapa pulled some strings to get a job on the South Shore, a railroad that ran from South Bend to Chicago. There he got consistent work, a consistent paycheck, but also was gone 7 days a week. We can only imagine the strain it put on their relationship, but their love stayed strong.
After a lot of hard work, when my Dad was about 4 years old - 1950 or so, Gram and Bapa were able to buy their first house. Bapa knew someone at the bank, and because he was in the Navy, he got a military loan. He was able to buy his first (and the one he remains in to this day) house in 1950 for just $5,800. A two bedroom, one bath, with a basement...it was perfect. No garage, no driveway, but all that would come...
Bapa kept working for the railroad and Stevie was born...just 4 years apart, the boys would fight like all brothers do, but have been close as adults. (Ask Stevie about going fishing with his big brother!)
A garage was added, a driveway, and after hours and hours of hard work, Bapa finished the attic and turned it into a two-room bedroom/study for the boys. Hardwood slats cover the walls everywhere, perfectly fitted and finished to this day, 50 years later.
The boys grew up, as kids will do, and Jimmy got married. Stevie later joined the Marines and got married, too. 3 grandchildren and 3 1/2 great-grandchildren later, the house still stands as a symbol of the love Gram and Bapa shared for so many years.
When Gram passed away, all of us felt a hole in our hearts and in our lives. She genuinely loved each and every one of us. I am convinced that the love she shared with Bapa fed her, especially through the tough times near the end when we all thought our hearts would break.
Thank you, Bapa and Gram, for the shining example of love you have shown us throughout your lives and throughout the years.
I love you.

Best-est Friends!
My friend, Karen, and I have been best-est friends since college. We've known each other for over 17 years...and yes, that's half of our lives! (Do the math - how old are we??? No, wait. Don't do the math!!!)Anyhoo - here we are posed with our kiddos. We've all been on lots of adventures together, but most recently Karen has gone on the adventure of motherhood again! Baby Jacob just turned one! (He was in progress when this pic was taken.)
One night, I visited and got to give him a bath. Do you like his hair???
Here's baby Jacob!
What do rainbows smell like??? (revised)
Well, J thought that was a great deal, and ran off with a shovel and a bag to pick it all up. He was done in just a few minutes, so I went out with him to inspect. After finding 4 more piles and standing over J to make sure he did a good job, J wasn't so sure that just 2 bucks was enough. It was more work than he expected! At one point, he looked at the full bag and dirty shovel and said, "Mom, I sure wish poop smelled like rainbows!"
I asked him tonight about that comment...
Mom: "What do rainbows smell like?"
J: "I dunno."
Mom: "Then why did you say you wished poop smelled like rainbows?"
J: "Because it should smell like there is money at the end of it."
Mom: "You mean like how there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?"
J: "Yep - like there's money for me at the end of the poop."
So now we know.

Cornhole!
Football! Football! Football!
J started his season first - flag football at our church is one of his favorite things. J is a great RB, and in today's game, he caught a 15 yard pass for a touchdown! He's always running hard, and always paying attention to what is going on. We are so proud!
R decided he wants to play football, too. But - he's too old for flag football now, so he's joined the CYO 3rd and 4th grade team. Mark took him to get his practice pants, pads and shoes today - how does he look?
Mark took R out in the backyard to practice running and catching with all of his equipment. R ran laps around the yard, caught some passes and practiced blocking to protect the QB. J volunteered to be the QB and helped out with the practice.
The boys even practiced tackles, being knocked down and getting up again right away. Mark kept knocking R down, and they got a little carried away...
Could somebody tell Mark that you can't do a piledriver when you tackle???

Nexus
Mark plays keyboards in the band, "Nexus" and every once in a while the kids and I get to go and watch him. Here's a blurb of him playing for the fish fry at our Church. R actually made this video with my phone! Oh, what a wonderful technological world!
Concert night
On Wednesday night, Mark and I went with our friends, Bryan and Chanel, to a concert at nearby Verizon Wireless Music Center. We listened to Cheap Trick from the parking lot, walked in and watched the last half of Heart's songs, and then stood on the lawn to listen to Journey. We all had fun trying to dance on the slope of the lawn...it's quite a challenge after you've been at the concert for a while and you're not the designated driver of the evening!

Mark's Birthday!!!
35 is a big year - and so he got all of the best things I can offer...
His Mom's spaghetti and meatballs (with spicy sausage,) "Christopher's" salad, broccoli, garlic bread, and yellow birthday cake with chocolate icing!
All of the neighbor kids came over in the afternoon and played - just waiting until Mark was ready to eat. They just wanted cake!
